Spice it Up, Egg Style

The word "spices" makes me think of the scene in the movie Ratatouille where the mouse is energetically tossing spices and other ingredients into the pot. Everyone should feel that kind of confidence with it comes to adding spices and simple ingredients to their meals. Some of my favorite spices include cinnamon, oregano, dill, mint, cumin and paprika.

In my house, eggs are a simple, cheap and easy protein that we always have around. Sure, you can add salt and pepper to your eggs, but is that really all you got when it comes to flavor? These are a few of my favorite variation of eggs.

     Italian Eggs

Just add Italian seasoning, pepper and seasoning salt. Some people aren't into Italian seasoning. If that is you, just some parsley will add that herby goodness to your eggs.

These Mexican Style eggs include onion, jalapeno, tomato, and cilantro. If you don't have time to chop all these veggies, just put on some salsa and cheese and you are good to go!

I usually don't follow a recipe for this one. I just cut up a bunch of veggies, mix in some milk, crack some eggs in there, add some cheese and finish it off with whatever seasonings sound good. If you like recipes here is one from Alton Brown. I like to make this on those busy week days when you haven't had a chance to go to the store yet. You just put whatever leftover veggies or bacon (or ham or sausage) you have left over with the scrambled eggs and bake in the oven until it is cooked through. So easy!

I haven't tried this recipe yet. I am thinking maybe I won't.

Do you have any egg variations that you LOVE?

Healthy Egg Related Tip: I try to keep some hard boiled eggs in the fridge at all times to be a quick snack between meals so I don't end up eating unhealthy snacks.

Enjoy!

Healthy, Happy Eating

My freshman year of college I decided I was going to do a "cleanse" that basically involved eating only fruits and veggies for a few days. Well about 5 minutes into this "cleanse", I was eating a plate of raw spinach and I texted my friend and said " I am literally eating leaves." Want to know how long that cleanse lasted? About 5 minutes. Why did this last 5 minutes? It was because I was eating FREAKING LEAVES. Well actually it was because I was not enjoying what I was eating.

I often hear people say that they want to be healthy but that they don't know how to start or have the time. This blog is going to focus mainly on eating healthy and addressing these issues. I am by no means an expert on this, but I enjoy cooking and feel like I am starting to get a handle on how to make eating healthy actually enjoyable.

Eating healthy does not have to be a sad combination of saying all the things you can't eat mixed with depression about not liking food. Eating is a basic part of life, why should we have to hate it in order to reach our health goals? I often wish that fudge chocolate brownies had the same caloric and nutritional value of a carrot. Unfortunately they don't, so we have to be creative in order to make healthy food delicious!

My philosophy on food is moderation in all things and balance. My husband says he needs to balance his salts and sweets. I agree with this idea to a certain extent. Obviously we should have more healthy foods in our diet than unhealthy foods. I am going to give one tiny tip today that actually doesn't have to do with eating. It has to do with your mindset and relationship with food.

I often find myself thinking the word "skinny" instead of "healthy." This attitude leads to disordered eating. When the focus is the scale, we get caught up in fad diets that may lead to immediate results that are not sustainable in the long run. So many women yo yo between being heavy and thin because of this attitude instead of maintaining a healthy weight. This week as you go about cooking, think to yourself "how can this food nourish my body" instead of asking "how many calories is in this?"

Free Date Ideas for Bored Couples.

Has anybody every sat at home on a Saturday night wondering what to do? Well we have and regardless of your culture or place of origin you can relate. With this post we're not only giving you some awesome ideas, we're connecting cultures and building philosophical bridges between people. Here are 5 fun filled date ideas!

1. Have a sleep over, not in your living room or on the lawn, but in you kitchen! You can finally eat in bed and not have to worry about the crumbs!

2. Drive around looking for stranded motorists, offer them a ride and then zoom off right before they get to the car. The thrill everybody seeks in life!

3. Cut up celery and eat it. Adding some crunch to your relationship is soooo healthy.

4. Go get groceries, get in the check out line and then "go to the bathroom", but never come back. For added excitement take a small child with you and ask the cashier to watch them.

5. Make something to put on your wall, like an animal skin. Local cats work great!

Hope you have fun with these ideas. Feel free to leave any others you might have!
